Dear Mystery Author, you'd be delighted to know that I've taken the time (hours!) to look up Nana (the manga) again, specifically just to understand which Nana character was adapted into which HP character better - because the premise of this fic was so remarkably intriguing that I just... I just had to know. And with that extra bit of knowledge about Nana.... I have to say, you did an amazing job with this adaptation! *breathes*
I don't even know where to start! You've captured the very essence of Nana, but with a darker, deeper, more poignant twist to it - and you did it beautifully. Aching, and bittersweet but poetic and elegant all the same. Your words and the vivid imagery they invoke and how poetic they sound and feel... that was the first thing that I noticed about your fic when I first read it, despite my earlier confusion because I didn't know Ren Honjo died in the manga. Even then, despite being confused about Harry's role as Ren and about Ren's death, I love the way you describe things and make your words flow and form such beautifully vivid images in my head.
Luna with the cigarette in held between her fingers. Broken Harry with drugs and drowning in his misery. Beautiful Draco, obsessed and so in love. The bathroom scene (meep!). Neville with the guitar.... and the way everyone was so upset and still mourns so deeply for Harry and Draco (that made my breath catch by the way... but it was good pain).... If I were to list every single line/image that I like about this fic, I'm afraid I'll go on and on and never be able to stop.
And yes, if want to know, it was precisely because of my earlier confusion with Ren's death that made me feel so very guilty for not being able to truly appreciate the adaptation you've made of the story that pushed me to look up Nana again. Now though, with the extra bits of knowledge about Nana's universe that I've looked up... Oh. My. God. Amazing!
You've made Harry and Draco so beautiful together, despite all the angst they've been through, with your words and the way the story was told from past memories... just the way Ren and Nana were beautiful together. Kudos to you, mystery author! And OMG!! The portraits you've drawn were gorgeous too! I can't stop staring at them!
