Yes, a beta is someone who will read ovr your fic for errors and whatnot.

They don't only look for grammatical/spelling errors, but, if you want them to, they can check for american terms rather than british ones, making sure your characters are in-characer, look for plot holes, double check your cannon details, etc (depending on the person and what you need, of course). They're one of the most useful people for a fic writer.
