Title: Haste Thee Away
Author: [livejournal.com profile] evilgiraff
Prompt: Prompt 8
Adapted from: Little Red Riding Hood
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Word Count: 16k
Rating: PG-13
Contains (Highlight to view): *Scenes of torture (use of unforgivable curse) and some bloodshed.*
Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No profit is being made, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Notes: I wanted this prompt the second I saw it, so I hope [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes likes what I've done with it! I love fairy tales, the darker the better, and I hope I've done justice to Little Red Riding Hood with this story. Any accuracies in wolf behaviour can be attributed to Jack London and David Attenborough – and I've borrowed a mannerism from one of my favourite London characters. The title is taken from a Walter de la Mare poem: The Grey Wolf. Many thanks as always to my darling beta, O, who makes everything better. I couldn't have done this without you.
Summary: Deathly Hallows AU. It's dangerous to walk in the woods at full moon. This is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood; a grim fairy tale of fear and courage.

*flails*

Completely not anything expected, but so much better than I ever imagined with the prompt. It *worked* both as something that felt so canon-y as well as very true to the fairytale as well.

I loved Greyback. And the interactions between the Black sisters was amazing. *bows* I know I'm going to be eagerly awaiting reveals because this is so perfect. ♥♥

Phew, finally getting round to replies now reveals are up! I'm so pleased you liked this - as soon as I saw your prompt I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it, though it took a bit of thinking to get the ending! I was all "but if Harry is the wolf, the WOLF DIES IN RED RIDING HOOD ARRRRRRGH", so magic to the rescue! :D I'm so pleased you liked the Death Eaters too, I loved writing them - dark and psychotic characters have so much depth to play with.

Thank you for prompting! ♥♥♥

Whew, this was great to read. I love the way you twisted it to actually fit canon. It's easy to imagine it happening exactly like that in the book. (Oh I wish it had actually happened like that. ^^)

My favorite scene starts shortly before Harry's first transformation when Draco meets Greyback, whom you pictured terrific, btw, and ends after Harry changes back. I really felt for both of them.

I love the way their relationships grows slowly more intimate. The comfort they share is so lovely. I think you chose a nice and original take on the fairy tale. It was a pleasure to read this fic. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you! It was by turns a massive pain and a lot of fun to write this, so I'm pleased the effort paid off. And I loved that meeting with Greyback too - I think his character owes a fair bit to Charles Dickens, though!

This was just perfect. The interaction between Harry and Draco, the black sisters and the ending, it was just so perfect. I had a big grin on my face at the end of the story.

Wow, that was such an original take on the fairy tale! I loved your Fenrir, and the relationship between Bellatrix and Narcissa. They were all so wonderfully shudder-worthy. And your writing was beautiful, so rich and full of wonderful details. Like the ice house! What a great idea. :) I loved how in the midst of all the grimness of captivity and werewolves, this delicate little friendship and closeness flowered. There was still something of the fairy tale about it all. The ending was particularly satisfying too - so sweet after that touch of heartache. I really enjoyed this, thank you for a wonderful read.

That was amazing. Familiar but so very surprising at the same time.

I loved the image you painted the first time Draco brought him dinner; with the wind blowing hard. And then the first night of Harry's transformation, just wow. In my mind I saw his red cloak blowing in the wind, such a classic image. You wrote this wonderfully.

I loved it, loved the ending, loved the whole thing. Excellent. :)

Girlllll...that was simply amazing! When I read the prompt then read your summary I was seriously thinking about not reading it! How can it work right? But damn you proved me wrong! Ahhh someone needs to draw art for this! Draco is a red cloak with his pale features and and....I can see it in my head! Then they mentioned obliviating and I seriously got pissed! I thought it was gonna end there and I was getting ready to leave a comment... but even then! I love your bellatrix and greyback! Amazing! Brilliant! Dhewsjudeswhj! Then that beautiful dancing scene! Cutest thing ever!
Oh and I've never participated in one of these so I was getting ready to click on the author name then had a minor freak out when there was none! Rest assured when you are revealed to me your stories will not be safe :-D fantastic!

Ohhh, I would love someone to draw art for this - in my mind, Draco is just made for being Red Riding Hood :D Dark-ish is always a possibility with fairy tales, though, they're far more full of gore and peril than modern children's stories, and it makes them great fun to adapt. I'm so pleased you liked it - I hope you like my others too!

I really liked the atmosphere in the fic. It had a dark feeling. I could picture Draco in the red cloak and carrying the picnic basket. The fic felt familiar and new at the same time.

This is so far removed from the type of story I usually like to read, but I *loved* it. My favourite line was "What do you people normally do?" "Ask Hermione what to do." HAH! I loved all of it, really, the mood, the darkness, the rescue, the hugging, the memory being given back - all wonderful *happy sigh*

Lovely work!

This was such a great read! I was worried it would be too dark for me, but it wasn't at all. It was gritty, yes, which the setting required, and yet gentle and beautiful. The scene in which Harry is escorted to the ice house was (oddly) my favourite. It felt like a real hunt, and I loved that Draco didn't abandon Harry to save his own skin.

You actually managed to find a bit of humanity in both Bellatrix and Greyback without making them ooc. There should be a medal for that. The compatibility with canon only made it more amazing.

Oh! What a super lovely comment, thank you! *polishes medal proudly*

It is surprising how few fics have human Death Eaters - I went searching for Bellatrix fics as "research", but really struggled to find any with any real character development. I love playing with Death Eaters - they are all people, and much more interesting if you treat them like that instead of them being simply token evil. So, I'm really pleased you felt that humanity!

This was an incredibly entertaining read! So... enthralling in its originality, grimness and its vividness in details! I love the way you spun this enthralling tale - the characterizations of Greyback, Bellatrix, Narcissa, of Harry and Draco, the feel of canon-ness in everything they do, the slow buildup of Harry and Draco's relationship - from the first sentence to the last, each part is full of vivid yet intricate details! Like Bellatrix's walk and laughter, Draco's crimson cloak (He makes such a lovely Little Red Riding Hood in my head), the way Greyback "hunts" and eventually "kills", the description of the ice house and the path leading to it, Narcissa's fingers combing through Bellatrix's hair, Harry's (rather gruesome) transformation, Draco's Red Riding Hood-esque famous mention of Harry-the-wolf's enormous teeth, the legend of werewolves and so much more! Most of all I love the interaction between Harry and Draco... and how they've manage to find love despite everything, and how at the end of it all, it does fit DH in some small way.

A marvelous adaptation of the little red riding hood! A little bit dark, a little bit angsty but completely enthralling in its originality :)

Thank you! And particularly thank you for noticing "oh grandma, what big teeth you have" - I was giggling when I wrote that, but it had to be included or it just wouldn't have been the fairy tale :D I'm so pleased you liked it, it's lovely to have such kind comments!

This is a wonderful story! The mix of canon and the fairy tale is neatly done and I love your interpretation of the characters. So much to comment on but if I had to pick one thing it would be the darker elements are nicely balanced with the heartache and then happiness and hope. Thank you for an amazing read x

I really love this fic! It's so good! What a brilliant story, and a fun ride to go on. It was so much fun to read this, and I was sucked in from the very beginning. It is so genius and creative how you interpreted the fairytale. My favorite part, which I relive over and over in my head and had to read a few times over, is the scene where Draco is in red and Fenrir stops him and suggests Harry and he play with him, and then Harry claims Draco as his and Fenrir calls him pack. It was sooo romantic for Harry and Draco, or at least as romantic as werewolves can be lol. When Draco lost his memories, it broke my heart a bit, and I am SO relieved at the ending :D This is so fantastic, I am bookmarking this story and re-reading it again in the future. Really good work!!!

Thank you! I saw you were enthusiastic on the original prompt, so it's great to know that the finished product worked for you too. I'm glad you like the conversation between Draco and Fenrir - that was so clear in my head it was almost like just writing down a memory - Fenrir was all "I'z in your head, giving you my wordz" (because he's apparently now a LOLcat).

I hope it stands up to a re-read! ♥

LOL You seriously need to write more and more and more! :D Especially creaturefic with Fenrir and Harry being all jealous over Draco. PLEASE WRITE THAT! Actually, I wish I could write that, too. It is such a kink of mine for Harry to get jealous and protective over Draco and fight for his "honor" lol. I am such a sappy girl :P
