Drarry Titanic AU

Alright so I am rewriting Titanic as a Harry/Draco story because apparently I'm a masochist. But before starting, I was doing some 'research'(read: watching the movie) and I find that gender inequalities and het are the very essence of the story. So I was wondering if how slash will fit in. Of course, one can write about the unacceptability of homosexuality in that age but that will steal the spotlight from the issues in the movie, i.e.,  divide in social classes and sinking of the ship. Moreover it will wind up being incredibly long, I'll be too lazy to write it and thus it'll be abandoned.

So there can be two other ways to write this: either a world where homosexuality is a non-issue or a world with female Draco aka genderbending. I can't decide between the two so, thoughts/opinions anyone?

Also I'm not sure how to tag this so there's a plethora of tags. I'm sorry.

the idea is very interesting and sounds like really a lot of work *fingers crossed that you get it done*
and for the gender thing- this would work well with an alpha/omega verse i think - because its keeping the gender and not keeping it at the same time - and you do not have to get into a deep discussion about homosexuality and so it wouldn't steal to much of the spotlight
gender bedering might make it to much like the original from the setting you know?
but this is just my opinion... but i hoped it helped you a very tiny little bit
good luck with the writing

Not sure if you know this story: Unsinkable by [livejournal.com profile] dark_branwen, which is a Harry/Draco Titanic AU. (!!!! story is top!Draco!!!!!). It is an AU where Harry is magical but never was told about the wizarding world. The author very much highlights the class and race) aspects of the original story; Harry and Draco's relationship is the kind of clandestine affair it would be in the time period. It works very, very well.

This sounds absolutely awesome and I hope you do write it!
I think you can go a number of ways... A lot of the movie's plot does revolve around het and sexism, but I think classism is also a huge part of it, and Draco could absolutely find himself forced to marry a rich heiress because his family's finances are going down, right?
I would love to read genderbending too, though, so I say just go with whatever feels best to you. I really think you can write it without genderbending if you wish to, with homosexuality being an issue. I can see it, it would make for a great fic!

You can always go w/ the route that no one told Harry about his roots and he was always thought of as Muggleborn instead of half-blood and maybe it's an AU where Voldemort wins and Purebloods are the high society and half-bloods or Muggleborns are the bottom of the barrel?

Then I am also wondering if you're going to have Ron and Hermione as side characters given Ron is pureblood and Hermione is Muggleborn...

Anyway, it's an idea. I hope it helps.
