I went through high school and a good portion of college and was a T.A. this past semester in an English class. Don't let letter grades make you feel content in your English performance. There should always be a difference between the standard an institution holds you to and the standard to which you hold yourself. Sadly, getting an "A" doesn't mean much in practice.
I ramble. So, while you say you would never write a fic with poor spelling and grammar, the fact that you would write anything that way implies laziness, insincerity and disregard for language. Personally, I don't think it's ever acceptable to intentionally ignore the basic rules of language. If you know and understand them, use them. Always. It looks awful if you don't.
None of this is meant to offend. It's something that I have serious issues with.

Errors are unavoidable but it's practically sacrilege to blatantly disregard it, imho.
I will admit to being weak with syntax--and to think I got an A in all my English and Literature classes. This is why I work with an editor for all my works--whether published or personal.
Anyway, It's hard for me to imagine that people have an on and off button for grammar. I mean, when I text, I text in whole sentences as well. Sure, I short-cut but they aren't sticky caps--I usually just change the word "to" into "2" and that's very rare (mostly because I don't have cellphone buttons, just the screen to manipulate the body of my text). Other than that, I wish to retain polished sentence structure, proper conjunction/preposition usage, and spelling--but English isn't my first language (technically) and I'm aghast that people who are able to, choose not to.

It's official. LJ is a better community than deviantART. I've gotten much more positive response to this one little message strain on LJ than on countless helpful suggestions to "blooming writers" on dA. And here I wasn't even the one to start it! This is a very exciting moment. Other people who value language really tickle me.
I think you've really got something with the English as a learned language vs. English as a kind of instinctual one angle. English is hard. Why make it harder by ignoring its structures? Even I sometimes sit for a few minutes and wonder exactly which preposition to use (of/from can be challenging to anyone... or should that be for?). Not doing that hurts eeeeeveryone. But, to be fair, I didn't even know what a preposition was until I began studying Spanish. Just goes to show: everyone should study a non-native language. It whipped my English into shape better than anything else could, I think.

And yes, indeed, English is definitely hard! I know a lot of individuals, whose first language is English and yet, they have a hard time comprehending the structure and the rules. Goes to show that just because you speak in a distinct twang, doesn't necessarily make you perfectly proficient in English.
Learning English and learning how to write is an incessant process for me. I love how, when you've gotten the crucial foundation of the language, you're able to manipulate it at will and play it down to an art. But like you, I wouldn't have understood how beautiful it was until I learned Chinese (along with my native language).

Language is a funny beast. It's the same as the other arts in that the more you learn about it, the more you understand that you'll never be perfect, that you still have far to go. It's both frustrating and encouraging. Very odd.

Mod's hat off--I'm just a bit baffled. You claim to be adroit with the language yet you feel that this post is irrelevant hence, it doesn't deserve so much as basic punctuations. What's my assurance as a reader that whatever you're planning to write (and have written) will be of quality? Please don't take this particular comment as an attack towards you and your skills--I'm sure you write wonderfully and such but I'm just concerned--no, curious actually. I never knew the utility of language(s) had hierarchies. When do you know when it's irrelevant to be proper?
Also, apart from that, doesn't it scare you that despite your competence with the language, people will get the impression from this post that you're unable to "deliver"? I mean, sure, it's their loss, but I think it's a pity that this post will rob readers of their opportunity to read your work.
Lastly, I apologise if this comment offends you. I'm not perfect with the language but I just needed to clear things up. Not just for me but for the people above who don't quite get it as well.

And I'm TRULY a big fan of them not knowing they could love another boy until they've found/discovered feelings for/got over the childish hatred for each other.
Hope that sparks some inspiration for you! Good luck!

The fic I wrote for the Fairytale Fest here on bottom!Draco takes root in Phantom of the Opera and totally has that obsessive love thing going on. (You don't need to know Phantom to get the fic.)
I also like the "they're not established gays" deal. I ended up having to do that for Spirit of Hogwarts for Draco to fit the prompt, but Harry certainly never has a history of being attracted to men.
Anyway, all my fic can be found on my masterlist. And, uh, sorry for the blatant and disgusting pimpage! I just thought, "Ooh, ooh! I know a fic that fits that description! Crap. It's also mine..."
