Recently I just find myself reading fics I've already read because whenever I search for any new fics I either just find one's I've already read and know I enjoyed so I re-read them, find crappy BottomDraco fics that I read anyway because there's nothing else, or I'm too chicken shit to read a fic that may or may not be BottomDraco or BottomHarry because BottomHarry makes me want to crack my skull open and feed the contents to a duck. Ahem. Anyway...
I'm looking for any fics in which Harry and Draco have a secret relationship but everyone wants to know what or who is making Harry so happy, or something genererally like that, Or any fics in which Harry and Draco meet again when their older and Harry is more confident and at ease with himself; bonus points if he's physically bigger.
The question I wanted to ask was, why do you think so many people prefer Harry to be a bottom? (other than, in the film he's the size of a raisin.) I ask this because I'm seriously finding it difficult to find any half decent HarryDraco fics (especially because I've become so incredibly picky) because there's just bottomHarry stuff EVERYWHERE. *hemorrhage*

I actually find myself overwhelmed by the amount of new bottom!Draco being written and posted, even within this comm.

Date: 2010-06-14 07:50 pm (UTC)I think BottomHarry is still at large over at fanfiction.net.
Agreed about the personal preference thing. I tend to be quite finicky over what I like so maybe that's why I find it difficult to find a piece of fanfiction I like :D I shall have to work on that >.<

Date: 2010-06-14 07:54 pm (UTC)I have fairly narrow tastes too, maybe (although I don't mind some switching and I can read bottom!Harry, depending). It's always just a matter of wading through the massive amounts of stuff out there. That's the hard part for me.

As for recs, sorry, dun have any that might interest you that you haven't probably read by now. Hope you get more luck with the other users.

Date: 2010-06-14 09:36 pm (UTC)I find fanfiction.net so annoying !! I can't read anyting from there anymore (unless sumone as recomended it) cuz everytime i tink 'Oh this sounds good!' it turns out to be an accursed weakling!bottom!OOC!Harry and it drives me nuts -_- (the quality of the fics on there are also... bad). How can the hero of the wizarding world possibly be a bottom to Draco of all people!
The only reason I think that people think Harry as a bottom is because Daniel Radcliffe is stupidly short. That's the only thing I can think of it being! Based on character and looks Draco is so the bottom! With his blonde hair and all and his snide little comments and his body guards Crabbe and Goyle! He's hardly macho or top material...

Date: 2010-06-15 01:02 pm (UTC)plus, Tom Felton!
Err, ignore initial comment
Date: 2010-06-15 01:23 am (UTC)Coincidentally, there were more well-written works from before though. I don't know what happened but I guess back then, the plot was more flexible?
Anyway, as for the presence of bottom!Harry fanfiction--I asked several friends of mine who were into this preference, mind, and I can't say for sure that this is a general fact or one that's wholly true but well, this is what they say:
One, most of them are females and they tend to associate themselves with the main character, which is Harry, simply because the book is told in his perspective or POV. They say and I quote, "What silly girl wouldn't want to have Draco swoon over them?" (Their logic, not mind, I'd rather have an unshaven Harry swoon over me!)
Next, they reason that Draco's personality, though posh and classy, seems rather aggressive. To them, aggressive is equated to rugged. I wanted to say that Draco's too prissy to get dirt under his nails but well, to each his own.
Also, they think Harry is subservient in all aspects. I will admit that Harry bitched my ear off during the fifth book but well, I happen to think the manliest men are the bitchiest out there.
Personally, I think it's a matter of chemistry. Yes, it has something to do with their personalities but I don't think it should automatically mean that bottom!Draco = submissive = femme. Draco just seems like the type who is spoiled enough to demand more pleasure as opposed to giving it--reveling in gratuitous sex most importantly.
Re: Err, ignore initial comment
Date: 2010-06-15 11:55 am (UTC)I think Draco is aggressive in a verbal sence (though I personally think his snark is self protective thing) but if Hermione's bitch punch was anything to go by, he's certainly not much of a physical fighter.
Plus, I don't know how old your friends are, but I find that young girls tend to like their bottoms to be very sub (blushing-virgin-lie-back-and-take-it kind of thing) cause most people see the bottom as themselves and teenage girls have a tendency to think like this.
But I personally like my bottom's to have attitude :D (and Draco's got plenty of that.)
Re: Err, ignore initial comment
Date: 2010-06-16 01:33 am (UTC)My friends are as old as I am but fandom-wise, probably not as old. I'm almost twenty-two but I've been in the fandom since i was twelve. Several of my friends started their foray into slash fandom only about three to four years ago.
I personally think age has no effect on self-projection but I do agree that the younger ones tend to make the submissive ones femme--which is something I don't particularly promote but nevertheless, I peruse through anyway.
I also agree! I like bottoms to have more attitude and spunk! It really depends on the character's makeshift--the character's appearance is not a determinant. Personality, on the other hand, is--probably not the most telling factor but it still plays a part. Besides, it's just a preference, I don't know why some people think being submissive = derogatory, being a top = proof of manly machismo. Whatevs.
Re: Err, ignore initial comment
Date: 2010-06-15 12:56 pm (UTC)The thing about it being because the book is in Harry's POV is summin else i agree with, we see all his sides; his weaknesses, his bad times and vulnerable times...
I suppose you could read Draco's character both ways... I for one don't see him as rugged at all :L. Draco's all talk and bitch and no action, he's a pussy. Why else is he always between Crabbe and Goyle? Certainly not their brains or looks.
I can't believe there was a time that reading a fic with Harry bottoming didn't bother me! Well, I think I've always preferred Harry to be some-what of a top, but I didn't take any notice of details like who shagged who it seemed irrelivant to the fic (you could tell I was young obviously :L). To me, being a top isn't just about shagging, it's a role in the relationship, the leader/defender of sorts without it being forced if you get me. Harry's the perfect match, he's protective of those he loves, he's brave, he's stubborn, he doesn't wimp out of a fight and heck he's gone against a serial killer more times than is healthy. He has many top traits but that doesnt mean he doesnt cry sometimes, doesn't get vulnerable, everyone has those times. Which is what people confuse with his character when they choose to see Harry as bottom -_-. No... we jsut haven't been given the chance to see Draco's character as much as Harry's. Imagine the book being from Draco's POV and then imagine what glimpses we'd get of Harry, you wouldn't peg him as a bottom if that was the case! Not once has he been weak around Draco but Draco's been weak loads of times around Hrry (forbidden forest, buckbeak, girls bathroom, ferret... need I go on?)... I know what I'm trying to say okay and I know that paragraph wasn't coherent but what can you do... Lol.
And nonono I totally disagree with the person who said that awfully written bottom!Draco is as bad as an awfully written bottom!harry. No it's not! Because at least the badly written bottom!Draco fic has the positive of being bottom!Draco (ahaha)! I also think Harry's impulsiveness would make him more of a top than a bottom... Sorry just needed to add those in...
Was I the only person who didn't notice the bottom/top thing that goes on in the fandom when I first read Harry/Draco? (Infact... I think I covered my eyes at the R rated scenes... even at 14 I think :L). I can only remember reading switch fics... I can't even remember reading a bottom!Harry fic (as in a full on bottom!Harry fic).
Re: Err, ignore initial comment
Date: 2010-06-16 01:38 am (UTC)Also well, personally, I like my bottoms prissy but I don't necessarily think they are incapable of defending themselves. Likewise, I think that I like my tops to be dense and slightly careless but hey, I think they need defending all the same.
I really do think it's a matter of preference! Haha.
I more or less read a book detaching myself from it. Like, yes, I see myself as Harry upon reading and to be honest, I am able to separate the canon-verse from fanon-verse simply because whilst reading the book, I've called Draco a twit more than I'd like to because I sympathized with Harry but fanon-wise, I just want to get them together. In fact, I thought that Harry deserved his life in the epilogue--after the unjust turmoil he's been subjected to, it was only perfect for him to have a rather nondescript, simple life. Fanon-wise, I'd rather disregard the epilogue. XD
Re: Err, ignore initial comment
Date: 2010-06-17 08:32 pm (UTC)I will be very, very interested in reading that book/fic... if it is bottom!draco fic! =D
no subject
Date: 2010-06-15 03:56 am (UTC)Bottom!Harry appeals to me then because to me I feel Harry needs to be taken care of due to his neglect in his early years and he in my humble opinion doesn't know how to take care of himself. Hermione and Ron tend to look out for him, no? Besides that, I figured that well he needs a sanctuary to let loose from all the saving-the-world thing. Draco will not coddle him too much unless there's heavy sarcasm involved. Like 'Snatch'(doesn't mean it's a bottom!H fic, they didn't proceed to the sex level). And Draco seems so in control unlike Harry whose impulsiveness makes me want to bang his head or douse him in ice water. Protective-but-pretending-not-to-care!Draco fits and is IC, no?
However I've changed my tune since then and switched to read bottom!Draco fics now cause we have prolific authors that write amazing bottom!Draco and they hit all the things that I want in a HD fic better. Besides bossy bottom and dominant!protective!Harry is hot. Draco being comforted is <3. I've been spoiled by amazing bottom!Draco and cannot to converted back. But I do read SOME switching!fics those are only the times where I can stomach bottom!Harry.
Yes I agree horribly written bottom!Draco out there that are as bad as awfully written bottom!Harry.*sighs* Make me want to gorge my eyes out. I like my boys as equal in personality and strength but I take good ones as it is.
Here are a few recs but I think you may have already read them.
1) "Chasing the Pride of Portee" by Newshound is one where they HAD a secret r/s and Harry was happy. Ahhh I can't recall if Harry is physically bigger (same goes with the rest of the recs) but he is an auror and he can ahem exert his authority over Draco. *cackles* However it's currently WIP, features Harry in a r/s with OC and plot is moving towards the angst direction <3.
http://www.thehexfiles.net/viewstory.php?sid=14069
2) "Lush Life" (Sequel to Lettered) by pir8fancier
http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=13315
3) "If Wishes Were Children..." by oldenuf2nb. Tho I can't really if they were in a secret r/s. I think they are but may be wrong.
http://community.livejournal.com/hd_inspired/8916.html
4) "Animal Arc" by enchanted-jae.
http://enchanted-jae.livejournal.com/tag/animal%20arc
5) "Greenland Ranch by Reiko Katsura. There is a bit of As/S tho I advise you skip em cause I think you would prefer a top!Potter. :P (So do I)

Cheers.

I like bottom!Draco because I love him with Harry, I think it suits both their personalities better, (I totally agree with the last paragraph above as well) and Harry is just a big ole turn on for me, lol.
Also, Draco is always after Harry to get a reaction, I think he wants Harry to snap and just take him, I think he wants to lose himself in Harry, but he's never given the chance. In canon. ;) And for Harry, having someone give in to him, as much as Draco ever could, seems to be something he would like. Having that control, that much trust from another person...it's not something he's ever really had, yk? He's never been in control of his destiny, and no one trusts him, even Ron and Hermione don't at times. A lot of the time. :(
I find a lot of bottom!Harry and while I don't mind reading it, I have a marked preference for bottom!Draco, as I feel it's more IC and I like the visual of a grown-up, powerful and masculine Harry pounding prissy, spoiled Draco into the mattress like there's no tomorrow. ;)
I do find bottom!Draco more frequently, but perhaps it's just because I'm looking for it? Dunno.
Anyway, my last two fest fics were bottom!Harry by request and I'm SO relieved to be writing for this comm again...it's hard to go so far from my inclinations. ;)

Date: 2010-06-16 01:47 am (UTC)Well said, my friend. I personally don't mind reading bottom!Harry, it's not as if it has any psychological effect on me whatsoever but I just don't derive pleasure from it. it just seems off and though it's not harmful in any way, the illogical action is tantamount to subjecting myself to purposeful mental torture.
Also, I don't find well-written, good quality bottom!Draco fanfiction often but I do find a lot of obscure, no mention of sexual roles fanfiction that are mostly well written. Usually, I prefer those because then they'll be left to my imagination. XD I find myself writing those so as not to exclude bottom!Harry fans as well.

Date: 2010-06-15 06:39 pm (UTC)I really hate it when in a summary or whatever it sais 'HarryDraco' or 'HD' and then you read it and its DracoHarry! Get your names straight! (haha I made a joke! *headdesk*)
I've also read fics where in the beginning it has all the characterization of a bottomDraco fic and then when it gets to the sex Harry's suddenly the bottom! I'm sitting their with a WTF expression thinking 'you decieved me!'

Date: 2010-06-17 08:05 pm (UTC)This is actually what I hate the most! And probably the only reason I ended up reading exclusive top!Draco fics. But still, a good fic is a good fic. I usually remembered the title/author but I deleted it from my hard disk as soon as I finish reading it XD
I will be forever grateful if authors would be willing to give warning on who's top, who's bottom or if the fic is switching fic. Even subtle codes like Harry/Draco, Draco/Harry and HarryDracoHarry is sufficient.

Date: 2010-06-16 08:03 am (UTC)I really think it's all about who you identify with when reading the books, and since most of us are females and, technically, we're on the receiving end of sex, we tend to like our chosen characters to bottom. If that makes sense. Personality would also factor into this, of course.
But whether you identify with Harry or Draco, I just don't see Harry taking it up the ass for anyone. He had a life time of oppression, of people telling him what to do, of perceiving himself as a pawn in the magical community. I don't think he would allow himself to give up control that way. Also, the idea just annoys me.
no subject
Date: 2010-06-16 09:11 am (UTC)Actually, that sort of makes sense.
Also, I do agree that I think Harry should top. Only, I think the important clause to my statement would be often--I mean, it's wholly understandable if they switch from time to time, and perhaps when Harry is paired with someone else, depending on who it was, he could perhaps bottom?
The character I don't see willing to give up his control though is Ron but hey, maybe that's cause I'm such a Ron stan. XD

Date: 2010-06-17 07:50 pm (UTC)I personally like Draco as a bottom because I imagine he'll be a helluva firecracker bottom! Bossy, prickly, snarky, proud, stubborn, cunning, witty, demanding, mischiveous, seductive and still there is an elegant edge within him. =)
