Fic Search
Mar. 31st, 2010 12:23 pmI need some help...
- Does anyone know the fic called "The Lights" (Sorry I don't remember the author name). It's M-Preg. Draco is the one who pregnant and I think their daughter's name is Godiva.
- Could you guys recommend me some good M-Preg or good angsty Harry/Draco fics for me (The one that you think it's not well-known but really good or it's the new one). It'd be nice if it's Bottom!Draco.
Thank you so much.

Date: 2010-04-01 12:15 pm (UTC)I can't help but think that people who read only bottom!character slash(and I mean exclusively) are looking for someone to play the woman's role in a two-person relationship. They're looking for man/female instead of man/man. I feel that while they probably like the idea of man/man, they're probably too uncomfortable with the full notion of it and can't get into it at all unless one of the men are portrayed with female traits or behaviors.
I only read bottom!Draco and the above does not describe me at all. I am not uncomfortable with male/male. I'm not looking for feminized males, but I am looking for a subversive take on heterosexual relationships.
Draco is my favorite character, and that is why I like him to bottom. When I say a character bottoms, I'm speaking about the sex act only, not the character's behavior outside the bedroom. I like both male characters to behave like men, not women or infants.
My favorite H/D fic ever is Shadow of His Wings (http://theguestroom.houseofhobbits.com/hp/sohw.html), in which both Harry and Draco are complete bad-asses. (This fic contains the best H/D duel ever written, IMHO.) Draco is in no way portrayed as effeminate, but he does occupy the traditional female role in most romances. He is the one that is coveted and pursued. When he bottoms he assumes a traditionally female power. I like how subversive that is, and I like that my favorite character is admired and made much of.
It's true that a lot of fics feminize Draco or Harry. (Actually, I think it would be more accurate to say they infantilize them.) I don't like that kind of fic at all, but I have no problem with others writing or reading them. Slash does not equal 'gay'. If you want accurate portrayals of gay relationships, you should probably go read some gay fiction. The majority of slash is written by women for women. A lot of it does model heterosexual behavior because many of writers are heterosexual. Why should that be seen as a bad thing?

I, of course, can't speak for everyone (only my opinions, after all), but it can sometimes be a bit annoying seeing male relationships portrayed that way. Of course, I'm only implying fics where Harry and Draco (or any side to a relationship, really) is severely made feminine. I've come across quite a lot of fics where I was truly surprised that Harry or Draco or so-and-so weren't sporting boobs and a rack, simply because the author made them that way. There are also many authors who portray the bottom characters as weak, overly sensitive, dependent... so on and so forth. Not all, but quite a lot. I hate that role even in hetero (story-wise) reads, though, so I guess I'm really just expanding my opinion on that. I have nothing against bottom!character (if I did, I certainly wouldn't be lurking here!), but it's the extreme cases that confuse the hell out of me and more often than not, get to me.
And yeah, I read a lot of gay fiction. It's a reason why this stumps me, I guess, as there usually isn't much of a distinction in the genre between "bottom" and "top" except for which position they're taking sexually, but
a lot of people just don't "leave it at that".
It all comes down to preferences, though, which I understand completely. And I can pretty much read anything as long as it's well written and reasonable, so I'm probably not as adamant about the issue as it seems. It'll take a few days for everything to settle in my head and I can move the pieces around a bit, so I'll have to stop this conversation now because I have the same outlook as I did when I started it and am wholly unable, at this point, to look at everything from another perspective (as I would like to, since some interesting points were brought up). Thanks for stating your OP.

I forgot to warn - this is a WIP (probably abandoned). There are 21 chapters, and it's well worth reading, even if it's never finished.
